Panel discussion: From science to policy: Decision-making under uncertainty for global emergencies
Science plays a crucial role in helping governments make well-informed policy decisions, particularly in times of crisis. Science is not perfect though and how uncertainties are communicated to policymakers, and ultimately the public, is extremely challenging. If we can improve both the science of uncertainty and how this can be understood by those affected by it, then we can make our societies more resilient. This is increasingly critical in the face of global emergencies such as climate change and pandemics that affect the lives of millions of people around the globe. This panel session will discuss how Microsoft is working with the research community to develop new techniques to help improve decision-making under uncertainty and how this can be more effectively communicated to policymakers and the public during global emergencies.
