Keynote with guests: Toward AI that empowers more people more of the time
While there remains much to learn about the nature of intelligence, human or otherwise, we use our intelligence every day to advance a breadth of pursuits as diverse as we are, spanning work and play. The great promise of artificial intelligence is to help us achieve our goals – individually and collectively – and perhaps to discover new goals along the way that are worth pursuing. The recent explosion of large-scale AI is producing powerful building blocks and tools that are increasingly general – that is, effective in performing an increasingly broad range of tasks with minimal modification. Even as large-scale AI models transform the products and tools that we use every day, they are motivating new research frontiers aimed at realizing the opportunities they present while mitigating risks. This talk will briefly introduce some of the key drivers behind this wave of large-scale AI and highlight a few applications that illustrate recent trends – along the way, we’ll hear from Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, and a research team exploring co-writing a science fiction novel with AI. We’ll close with a sketch of research frontiers aimed at making large-scale AI more efficient, adaptable and collaborative toward empowering more people more of the time.
