Research in Focus: Internet Governance at the Crossroads

The upcoming negotiations on the treaty that regulates international telecom has thrown the standards for Internet governance up for grabs. On one side are most Western democracies, particularly the United States, which want to keep standards voluntary and market-driven; on the other are China, Russia, and various Arab states, which are pushing for mandatory regulations and stronger government controls. In this interview during the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit 2012, experts Mary Saunders of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Sally Wentworth of the Internet Society join Microsoft’s Paul Mitchell in exploring the implications.
