IntelliDrive – Intelligent Management of Attention in Automotive Environments

Établi : January 1, 2009

Driver attention is a valuable commodity in maintaining driving safety. However, with the proliferation of many interactive devices that place demands on the driver’s attention while driving, effectively allocating attention with the primary goal of managing driving safety presents substantial challenges. With the promise of having semi-autonomous vehicles on the road in the near future followed by a transition to fully autonomous vehicles, we are entering an exciting period of exploration and understanding how drivers adapt to unpredictable demands on attention.
Our research investigates new techniques for proactive mediation of driver attention. We focus on ensuring that driving safety is maintained at all costs by directing the driver’s attention towards upcoming events in the driving  scene if the driver is engaged in other peripheral tasks. Our research brings together artificial intelligence and human computer interaction in addressing problems such as developing models to predict driver attention and reaction to events on the road, developing awareness mechanisms that provide situation awareness and just-in-time notifications for drivers to safely take over driving control and determine opportune moments to suggest activities for the driver.
