Overview

In Microsoft, we build and operate several world leading complex and large-scale productivity clouds (Azure, Microsoft 365). The quality of cloud platforms, including reliability, performance, efficiency, security, sustainability, etc., has become immensely important. The distributed nature, massive scale, and high complexity of cloud platforms present huge challenges to build and operate such systems effectively and efficiently. Each independent service in cloud computing, such as computing virtualization, cloud storage service, distributed database, etc., is a complex distributed system. These services (including various services under the IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS models) together constitute the overall solution of cloud computing, and become a complex system (System of System). With understanding and analysis of such system architecture, we can optimize the cloud computing system and infrastructure, and to further improve the quality of cloud computing services.

Cloud systems and software analytics research has covered various topics of cloud system/infrastructure, software analytics and DevOps. Besides publishing 60+ papers in top conferences, the research team has delivered significant contributions in enhancing reliability, performance, capacity efficiency, productivity and sustainability for Microsoft cloud production. These general technologies can be expanded to other online services. Hence, we believe that ramping up our investments in cloud systems and software analytics research is crucial towards our long-term success.
