Strengthen your cybersecurity stance with a hands-on workshop
It’s no secret that cybersecurity is a concern for most Americans. More than 15 retailers in the United States have experienced data breaches since early 2017[1]. When consumers shop at their favorite grocery and department stores, they expect their payment and personal information to be secure. A breach in security can damage the trust shoppers have in a brand—consumers may take a break from shopping at compromised stores and 19% say they would quit shopping there altogether.1 A decline in shopping may in turn hurt revenue, causing a panic among stockholders, which continues to trickle down to consumers, causing irrevocable damage to that particular company.
Retailers aren’t the only organizations vulnerable to cyberattacks. The attack on PlayStation Network in 2011 resulted in the hacking of 77 million accounts.[2] The records included a host of private info—full names, purchase histories, credit card numbers, and login/password information. Reports estimate the costs associated with the breach at over $77 million while the PlayStation Network sites were inaccessible for weeks.[3]
Often users don’t know they’re being hacked, and cyberattacks can occur right within a user’s inbox, through phishing e-mails. This was the case in the recent attacks on US universities.2 Information from over 300 universities was compromised due to phishing e-mails where hackers stole 31 terabytes of data, estimated to be worth $3 billion in intellectual property.2 Education regarding phishing and other cyberthreats across organizations is imperative to decrease such attacks, but cybersecurity solutions must keep improving in order to help block future attacks on information and property.
