Four ways the modern CHRO role is changing

Chief human resources officers are being pressed like never before to rewrite the rules for how they recruit, develop, and engage the 21st-century workforce while simultaneously aligning talent strategy with business goals. Microsoft was excited to attend the  SHRM 2019 Annual Conference and Exposition and see first-hand how HR leaders are making it easier to collaborate across teams and to manage and retain talent.

Here are a few points about the changing nature of the HR industry and the role of the CHRO that stood out at the conference:

  1. Support for the full HR process lifecycle
With HR leaders wearing so many hats, efficiency is key Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Talent can streamline the entire hiring process, from recruiting to onboarding. Its LinkedIn integration connects recruiters with hiring managers to make sure there aren’t any gaps in communication. The entire process can occur within the same ecosystem, with steps from initial candidate assessments through offer acceptance available within the Dynamics platform.
  2. A strong start
Modern CHROs now know that the robustness of an internal network is strongly correlated with employee engagement. Workplace Analytics uses algorithms to propose the most appropriate network of people with whom the new hire should connect as quickly as possible. Making these connections from the start is a key strategy for setting the new employee up for long-term success.
  3. A human-centered approach to digital transformation
In a keynote talk, Joe Whittinghill, Microsoft’s CVP of Talent, Learnings, and Insights, shared lessons from Microsoft’s ongoing cultural transformation. Highlighting the breadth of issues the modern CHRO must consider, hshowcased best practices in combating unconscious bias. He also explored what allyship means in the workplace, and how it can help all employees feel comfortable showing up as their full, authentic selves – an important goal for any HR professional.
  4. Evolving functions
There are three key functions of the CHRO in the modern workplace, encompassing everything from outlining the company’s high-level talent vision to overseeing the tools that the HR department uses every day to keep things running smoothly.

    • The CHRO is the one who will design and carry out the company’s entire life-cycle talent strategy, from recruiting and hiring through developing and retaining employees.
    • She oversees the organization’s benefits suite and software systems as well as setting employee compensation rates.
    • The CHRO manages employee recognition and wellness programs, employee perks, and employee engagement.

Flawless organization and seamless collaboration are vital for coordinating so many moving pieces, which makes Teams a useful tool for keeping everyone in touch and in strategic alignment.
